16toads Family Grows

On December 26, 2008, 16toads adopted a beautiful girl.

Simone is a Loggerhead Sea Turtle being rehabilitated at the George Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. We are thrilled to welcome her to our family and look forward to the day when she will be fully recovered and able to be released. She will become an ambassador for the vital cause of sea turtle research and rescue world wide.

Human population growth continues to explode at the inestimable expense of our natural world. As a result of our inability to control our breeding habits, our generation will witness the extinction of roughly 30% of the worlds creatures within our life time. Sea turtles are among the most threatened creatures on the planet.

16toads is dedicated to helping protect these wonderful and beautiful creatures.

Good karma too you. That is awesome. I usually think about the whales, and am pretty upset over the Japanese “research” program, but hadn’t ever thought about sea turtles. Do they live as long as land-based turtles? I think I recently read that a 300 year or so old turtle that Captain Cook first found just recently died in Australia. Turtles are amazing creatures, and your pictures of Simone are quite heartwarming. Again, good karma to you.

PS. I hope the “16 toads” are jealous about the new turtle getting all the attention! wink

Thanks Steve!
Only 8 of them have shown any jealousy.  Sea turtles can live up to 80 years. Land-tortoises typically live about 150 years, if they aren’t made into soup first.

You’re welcome! I just googled “oldest tortoise dies” and found out the tortoise I mentioned was 176 years old and was a pet of Charles Darwin (don’t know where I got Captain Cook). It also said that “Harriet” was the world’s oldest known living creature.
Can’t believe people still make turtle soup. That’s a shame, and just plain wrong…

PS. Just reread my first comment and the first “too” should have be “to” and the last “are” should have been “aren’t”.  I should pay more attention! smile
