Do you understand Darwin’s Theory of Evolution?

CBS Sunday Morning broadcast a segment this morning celebrating the 200th anniversary of Darwin's Theory of Evolution. At the conclusion of the story, the results of a poll were shown.  I don't recall the exact numbers, but the results went something like this:

Do you believe in the Theory of Evolution?

39% replied "yes"

35% replied "no"

26% replied "no opinion"

It is worth noting that this question, "Do you believe in the Theory of Evolution?", is the only question that EVER gets asked when the topic of evolution versus "intelligent design" comes up. The problem is that the question is flawed.

The theory of evolution is not a "belief". It's a theory supported by scientific research and evidence dating back a millenia.

Intelligent design isn't a theory. It isn't based on any factual evidence whatsoever. The argument of intelligent design isn't even an argument. It is, howerver, a conversation stopper. Intelligent Design requires no defense, no supporting evidence, and no cognitive stimulation. It's simply a teleological argument used by people of faith to excuse themselves from the discussion of evolution without having to explain their rationale.

You don't have to agree with Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Two hundred years later the debate rages on. Regardless of your opinion, the factual scientific evidence supporting Darwin's theory cannot be denied.

So, the correct question to ask is ...

Do you understand Darwin's Theory of Evolution?

39% replied "yes"

61% replied "no"

The evolution debate is really about education (or lack thereof), not belief.
